This Cabin Opens Completely to the River

Set along the Sazava River, in the Czech Republic, the Riverside Cabin by Mimosa Architekti is a compact retreat shaped as much by what remains as by what was rebuilt. After a fire reduced the original structure to its stone base, the new design builds directly on that plinth, using it as both foundation and protection against flooding.

For a similarly compact and thoughtful retreat, check out the Devin Cabin which delivers a fully off grid living experience with a strong connection to its surrounding landscape.

The contrast between old and new defines the project. A lightweight timber structure sits above the heavy stone base, creating a clear balance between permanence and flexibility. Charred larch cladding wraps the exterior, adding durability while subtly referencing the cabin’s past, while sheet metal elements protect the structure from water runoff along the slope.

Inside, the space is simple and focused. Spruce panels line the interior, creating a warm and consistent finish, while a full height living area opens completely toward the river. Large folding shutters transform the cabin depending on use, revealing full glazing and uninterrupted views when open, or closing the structure into a secure, self contained volume when needed.

If you are drawn to architecture shaped by water and views, the Shoreline House offers a refined approach where structure and landscape work as one continuous experience.

The layout prioritizes shared space over private rooms. The ground floor connects directly to a raised terrace that extends toward the river, while compact sleeping areas sit tucked under the roof above. It is a restrained and thoughtful design that keeps attention on the landscape, allowing the cabin to shift between shelter and openness with ease.
