Squam Lake Tree House

Set just above the quiet shoreline of Squam Lake in New Hampshire, the Squam Lake Tree House is a thoughtful retreat that feels grown rather than built. Designed by Alchemy Architects, the home is best understood as a box of trees carved directly from the surrounding forest, using the forest itself as both material and inspiration. It is complex in how it is made, yet calm in how it lives.

The compact 1500 square foot home follows Passive House principles, with a prefabricated fiber based envelope assembled offsite to reduce waste and protect future forests. Inside, the space opens into a warm oak interior where digitally fabricated timber forms rise like abstract trees. These sculptural elements shape rooms, guide movement, and quietly pull light and air deep into the house. It is architecture doing real work, not decoration.

Large openings frame views of the lake and woods, while sliding glass walls blur the line between indoors and out. Daily life here feels slower and more deliberate, anchored by natural light, honest materials, and a strong connection to place. Even the nearby Boat House continues the same story, reflecting on how we live with forests rather than over them.

WARDELL SAGAN APARTMENT - Image

WARDELL SAGAN APARTMENT

This original open-space living/work loft is the creation of two San Francisco art and travel addicts, Jeff Wardell and Claudia Sagan. They bought a 3,200 sq ft former Chinese laundry and restored it as a living space. They also wanted to include a home office and a guest bedroom without cluttering the space, so they came up with the idea of stacking two shipping containers on top of each other to create private space within the open-plan living area. source Like...
