1990 Porsche 911 Safari

The 1990 Porsche 911 Safari is a rare reinterpretation of the classic 964 platform, inspired by the legendary off road spirit that defined Porsche’s Paris Dakar success in the 1980s. While the idea of a lifted 911 has become popular in recent years, this build pays direct tribute to the original rally heritage by combining classic air cooled character with true off road capability.

Based on a 1990 Porsche 964 Carrera 4, the car has undergone an extensive safari conversion that transforms the road focused sports car into a capable adventure machine. A raised off road chassis, reinforced underbody protection and dedicated off road tires mounted on Dakar style wheels give it real functional intent rather than just visual drama. Additional touches like Hella auxiliary lighting, a roof rack and sand plates reinforce the rally inspired look while remaining practical for real world exploration.

Inside, the build keeps a motorsport feel with Recaro bucket seats, a Heigo roll cage and classic details such as a Momo steering wheel and Pepita pattern upholstery. Power comes from the original 3.6 liter flat six producing around 250 horsepower, paired with a five speed manual transmission that keeps the driving experience mechanical and engaging.

Wrapped in Rothmans inspired graphics as a nod to Porsche’s rally history, the car stands out as both a tribute and a functional reimagining of the off road 911 concept. With restoration completed, full history available and all modifications type approved, this 964 Safari captures the spirit of an era when sports cars were pushed far beyond smooth tarmac and into true adventure territory.
