Home for an Artist
Tucked between meadow, wetland, and sea, the Home for an Artist is a tranquil cabin and studio retreat designed by Laura Killam Architecture on a remote Northern Gulf Island in British Columbia. The compact 650-square-foot cabin blends rustic charm with modern minimalism, honoring its surroundings while offering year-round comfort.
Elevated on point footings and nestled among Shore Pines, the cedar-clad cabin captures sweeping views of the meadow, sandy beach, and Salish Sea. Inside, vaulted ceilings and full-height windows flood the space with natural light, while the warm Douglas Fir floors and fog-grey accents create a calming palette. A clever open-air shower under a glass canopy connects to both the bathroom and outdoors, maximizing the compact layout.
Just beyond, a discreet painting studio rests above the wetland, accessible by boardwalk. Designed with artists in mind, it boasts large north-facing windows and sliding doors that open directly into nature, allowing for immersive plein air work in all weather.
Purposefully low-impact and deeply personal, this retreat is both an homage to the island's beauty and a timeless space for creativity and connection.
