A Coastal House Inspired by a Crab

Perched above the Oaxacan coast, the Casa Tobi by Espacio 18 Arquitectura is a striking coastal retreat that feels carved into its surroundings rather than placed on top of them. Designed as a refuge for a family of photographers, the home takes cues from nature, with a form inspired by a crab emerging from the rocks and a soft pink palette that echoes the tones of the landscape and nearby sea.

For a sculptural home that blends into its surroundings, check out the 91 Bridge House which stretches across the landscape like a suspended structure.

The architecture follows the steep terrain, stepping down the hillside in a series of interconnected volumes. At its center, a semi circular living space opens out to panoramic views of the Pacific, framed by large windows that dissolve the boundary between indoors and out. The layout flows naturally, with living, dining, and kitchen areas merging into one continuous environment designed to maximize light, air, and perspective.

Materiality plays a key role in shaping the experience. Pink stucco wraps both the exterior and interior, creating a cohesive and almost sculptural presence, while water features are carefully integrated throughout. Inspired by the natural formations of Hierve el Agua, pools and reflective surfaces not only enhance the visual experience but also help regulate temperature and airflow across the home.

If you are drawn to coastal homes rooted in their environment, the Cornwall Retreat offers a raw and understated take on seaside living.

Private spaces are tucked deeper into the structure, offering a more intimate atmosphere with framed views of treetops and the surrounding terrain. The contrast between the solid outer shell and the open, light filled interiors defines Casa Tobi, resulting in a home that feels both protective and expansive. It is a thoughtful piece of architecture that responds to its environment with precision, restraint, and a strong sense of identity.

Casa Modico Is Simplicity Done Right

Designed by Atelier Branco Arquitetura, the house is built as two identical white volumes placed lightly on the land, just above sea level. The layout is simple but deliberate. One volume holds the kitchen and two bedrooms, the othe...
