Hovding 3 Airbag Bicycle Helmet

The Hovding 3 took a radically different approach to bicycle protection, replacing a traditional bike helmet with an airbag worn as a collar around the neck. Built-in motion sensors monitored the cyclist's movements and, when a crash was detected, deployed an airbag around the head and neck.

Introduced in 2019, the third-generation Hovding featured an adjustable fit system, Bluetooth connectivity and smartphone integration. Its airbag design allowed cyclists to ride without a conventional helmet shell while keeping the protective system contained inside the collar until deployment.

Hovding 3 was discontinued following a 2023 dispute with the Swedish Consumer Agency over its protective performance. The original Hovding Sverige AB subsequently filed for bankruptcy, ending production of the third-generation airbag helmet.

The Hovding concept has since returned under new ownership. Austrian safety specialist iSi Group acquired the brand and technology and is developing the Hovding 4, a new generation of the wearable airbag system for urban cyclists.
