This Race Proven Porsche 550A Spyder Could Top $4 Million

The Porsche 550A Spyder is one of those cars that defines an era, and this example takes it even further. With over 25 race wins and a fully documented history from new, it stands as one of the most complete and proven 550A Spyders in existence.

Built in 1957 as part of a limited run of just 40 cars, the 550A refined Porsche’s early racing formula with a lighter and more rigid spaceframe chassis. This particular chassis, delivered to California racer Jack McAfee, quickly proved its capability, dominating SCCA events across circuits like Laguna Seca, Riverside, and Palm Springs.

- If you are into early Porsche racing heritage, the 1957 Porsche 356A Coupe Rally Car is worth a look.

What makes this car especially compelling is its continuous story. Ownership has spanned the United States, South Africa, Japan, and Germany, with each chapter adding to its provenance. It also carries a rare detail from its racing days, with a modified rear body section derived from the earlier RS 550, a feature preserved through its latest restoration.

That restoration alone sets it apart. Completed over six years by renowned Porsche specialist Andy Prill, the car underwent a full nut and bolt rebuild, with more than £300,000 invested to bring it back to exacting standards. The matching numbers gearbox remains intact, and the original engine case accompanies the car, along with period photographs, race programs, and documentation.

- For a more modern reinterpretation of Porsche performance, the 1990 Porsche 911 Singer DLS Turbo is a strong alternative.

Awarded Best in Class at the 2014 Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance and now described as box fresh, this 550A heads to auction in Monaco with expectations north of $4 million. It is not just a rare Porsche, it is a cornerstone piece of motorsport history.
