Balmuda The Clock is Designed to Replace Your Phone at Night

Balmuda has built a reputation around doing simple things better, and The Clock follows that same approach. It takes the idea of a bedside alarm and strips it back to what actually matters, removing the noise that usually comes with it.

At first glance, it feels familiar, but the details are anything but. The dial has no hands, using a soft illuminated system to display time in a way that feels calm rather than mechanical. It is subtle, easy to read, and designed to fade into the background instead of demanding attention.

The real shift is in how it replaces your phone at night. Instead of notifications and bright screens, The Clock offers ambient soundscapes like rain, wind, and fire, along with white noise modes designed to help you wind down or stay focused. The alarm builds gradually rather than jolting you awake, making mornings feel less abrupt.

While devices like Hatch or Dreamie build full sleep systems, Balmuda takes the opposite approach, removing complexity instead of adding it.

What pushes it into a different category is how it is made. The aluminum body is machined from a single block, giving it a density and finish that feels closer to a design object than a typical gadget. Balmuda also worked with LoveFrom, Jony Ive’s design firm, to access high-end manufacturing partners, a detail that helps explain the level of refinement here.

It is compact enough to travel with, with a built in battery that lasts up to 24 hours, and connects to an app for deeper control when needed.

This is not trying to be a smart device. It is trying to remove the need for one. A simple object designed to bring a bit of calm back to your routine, and keep your phone where it probably should be at night, out of reach.
