Lego Donkey Kong Arcade
LEGO and Nintendo are heading back to the arcade with a playable brick-built tribute to the original Donkey Kong. Designed for adult builders, the new LEGO Donkey Kong Arcade recreates the unmistakable cabinet and its sloping scaffold while adding a mechanical version of the game’s barrel-jumping action.
The 1,367-piece set features Donkey Kong at the top of the structure, Lady waiting nearby, and Jumpman attempting to survive below. Pulling the side lever releases a barrel onto the course, while the working joystick moves Jumpman from side to side and a separate button makes him leap over the incoming obstacles.
The clever part is what happens behind the display. Twenty-one barrels move through a continuous circulation system, rolling from the top of the scaffold into a concealed mechanism that returns them for another run. LEGO designer Carl Merriam reportedly tested thousands of barrel drops while refining the speed and reliability of the system.
Visually, the set remains faithful to the 1981 arcade game, complete with ladders, girders, a hammer, and the original pre-Mario version of Nintendo’s famous plumber. Once assembled, the cabinet measures more than 15.5 inches tall, 10.5 inches wide, and 5.5 inches deep, giving it enough presence to work as a proper display piece without taking over an entire room.
