J2R Electric Motorcycle
French electric motorcycle maker J2R has been building its identity around aggressive, street focused design since day one. The new prototype, developed with design and engineering studio Antracite, is the clearest expression of that direction yet. A sheet metal bodied urban electric motorcycle with motocross inspired ergonomics, built to feel like a dirt bike in the city.
The construction approach is the most interesting decision in the build. The bodywork is predominantly sheet metal where aesthetic panels and structural components are the same pieces. This is not a plastic fairing bolted to a separate frame. The skin is the structure. That dual purpose approach keeps tooling costs down significantly as the project moves toward series production, which matters for a small manufacturer trying to bring an electric motorcycle to market without the budget of a major OEM.
The riding position borrows directly from motocross. Upright, aggressive, and designed for agility and quick reactions rather than comfort on long straights. The 884mm seat height and 269mm ground clearance give it the stance of an off road bike while the 1460mm wheelbase keeps it nimble in tight urban spaces. At 120 kg empty it is light enough to feel genuinely playful in traffic, which is where this bike is designed to spend most of its time.
Power comes from a rear wheel electric motor producing 8kW rated and 16kW peak, equivalent to a 125cc combustion motorcycle. That classification makes it accessible with a standard B license plus 7 hours of training in France. Two removable multimodal 72V 50Ah batteries deliver an estimated real world range of 140 to 160 km in urban use. Fast charging takes 3.5 hours. Standard charging takes 6. The removable battery design means you can charge at home without needing a dedicated parking spot with a power outlet.
Formula supplies both the shock absorbers and the braking system. Full LED lighting covers front, rear, and indicators. A 4 inch LCD dashboard handles instrumentation. Single channel ABS provides braking safety. Controls run through a handlebar switch and companion app.
The prototype marks the first step toward industrialization with 417 individual pieces in the complete build. There is still engineering work ahead before production, but the foundation is set. J2R's design language has always sat at the intersection of lifestyle and performance, and this prototype makes the strongest visual case for that position the brand has produced.
