1954 Aston Martin DB2/4 Saloon 5-Speed
This immaculate 1954 Aston Martin DB2/4 is an early Mk I example that combines its original character with a handful of carefully chosen mechanical upgrades. One of approximately 565 Mk I cars produced, chassis LML551 was completed in September 1953 and delivered to California the following year through Chicago importer S.H. Arnolt. It was reportedly briefly owned by newspaper publisher William Randolph Hearst Jr. before later spending decades with another California owner.
The aluminum Mulliner body retains the car’s factory black color following a cosmetic refurbishment completed in the late 2000s. Period details include a leather hood strap, Lucas driving lights, chrome 16-inch wire wheels, and beige Connolly leather inside. The DB2/4 itself was an important evolution of the DB2, adding occasional-use rear seats beneath a distinctive higher roofline and practical rear hatch.
Power comes from the correct 2.9-liter VB6J DOHC straight-six with twin SU carburetors, originally rated at 140 hp. The engine underwent a substantial rebuild by Kevin Kay Restorations in 2008 and 2009, including new pistons, liners, bearings, valves, and camshafts. The original four-speed gearbox has been replaced by a T5 five-speed manual, while front disc brakes have also been added; the removed four-speed transmission is included with the car.
