Stilt-House Hotel
MAST, a Danish maritime architecture studio, has unveiled plans for the Stilt-House Hotel, set in a former salt production lagoon on the Sado Estuary near Setubal, Portugal. Inspired by traditional fisherman's huts, this eco-friendly hotel will feature over 50 stilted houses prefabricated from Portuguese cross-laminated timber.
Scheduled to open in late 2025, the site will also include a nature reserve. Guests can access their stilted accommodations via elevated bridges or by boat and kayak. An old salt production building will be converted into a restaurant and spa, while a birdwatching tower will offer panoramic views.
MAST co-founder Marshall Blecher emphasizes the project's sustainable approach, aiming to provide necessary accommodations while minimizing environmental impact. The development will also revive small-scale salt production, maintaining the area's rich heritage.
