Moke Valley Cabin by Fearon Hay

Set above Lake Wakatipu in New Zealand’s Queenstown Lakes District, Moke Valley Cabin is a compact retreat designed around the simple pleasure of stepping away. Created by Fearon Hay with interiors by Katie Lockhart Studio, the cabin offers warmth, privacy, and a close connection to the surrounding hillside without overwhelming it.

The steep site shaped almost every part of the design. A lightweight modular structure is secured to the slope with slender steel posts and tensioned braces, reducing the amount of ground disturbance while allowing the front of the cabin to appear almost suspended above the landscape. Much of the framework was prefabricated and helicoptered into place, avoiding a more intrusive construction process.

Inside, the plan is small but carefully resolved. A central block containing the bathroom, storage, and kitchenette separates the open living area from the raised sleeping space. Large sliding glass panels open the cabin towards the lake, while the elevated bedroom is more enclosed and positioned to receive the morning light.

Dark-stained cedar helps the exterior recede among the trees, while the interior shifts to warmer timber tones, soft lighting, woven textiles, and muted green accents. Built-in seating, handmade furniture, a freestanding fireplace, and a restrained selection of objects give the space a calm, lived-in quality without filling it with unnecessary detail.

Moke Valley Cabin succeeds because it does not try to compete with its setting. Everything, from the compact footprint to the low lighting and limited material palette, has been designed to slow the pace and keep attention on the landscape outside.
