Skull Bad Boy

Taking an inherently modern watch and making it a bit retro with the eye-catching H2 Tradition, Swiss watchmakers HYT are back to their usual style with the newly released HYT Skull Bad Boy, an extraordinary and unprecedented creation that breaks all the rules. Constructed with a new material designed to mimic Damascus steel (used in knives and samurai swords) the Skull Bad Boy sees HYT´s designers work to shape the unusually patterned metal into an ominous skull shape.

HYTs technology is unique. The brand has made a name for itself in the horological world with timepieces that use fluids pumped through bellows and tubes to display the time. It is the first brand ever to create a liquid indication of time. The Hydro Mechanical Horologists were the first watchmakers who succeeded at mixing liquid and mechanics within a wristwatch. They won four Innovation Prizes in 2012 for their unique fluidic watches.

The creative impetus for this iconic design came from the sculpted glass capillary in the shape of a skull that carries the fluid around the imposing centrepiece of the dial. This took years to refine and acts as the hour marker. Its indexes are created in a Gothic font, complementing the Skull Bad Boys hard rock look.

Creating a black fluid looks spectacular but is not without its problems. The inevitable result is that it is impossible to read the time on the Skull Bad Boy in the dark. Vincent Perriard, CEO of HYT explains this bold decision: ”It was a deliberate decision…There were other solutions which would have made the piece visible at night. But if we wanted to play with the darkness inherent to the Skull Bad Boy, we had to go all the way. Night is part of the world of shadows and darkness. Perfectly in tune with the spirit of the skull."

The HYT Skull Bad Boy features a matte black 51 mm case, made from fully microblasted DLC titanium, and is attached to a brand new buffed alligator strap with hints of slate grey.

Only 50 of these watches will be cast and, given the design process, no two will ever have the same pattern. The limited edition timepieces will come with a price of $95,000.
