January Scignal Running Shoes
The running shoe market is saturated with brands stacking foam higher, adding carbon plates, and chasing the same performance formula. January, a new San Francisco based brand founded by Wei-En Chang, enters the conversation by questioning whether that formula is the only answer.
The Scignal is the first running shoe to use a single piece dual density midsole. Rather than bonding two separate foam layers together, which adds weight and creates a seam that can degrade over time, January engineered one continuous piece of KineXion foam that transitions from plush at the heel to firmer in the forefoot. The heel absorbs impact. The forefoot delivers responsiveness. The transition between the two is seamless because there is no transition, just one material with two densities. That eliminates bulk, reduces weight, and creates a smoother heel to toe ride.
The foam itself is next generation supercritical aerospace grade TPEE, the same class of material used in premium race shoes but deployed here with a lower stack height for a more natural ground feel and faster energy return. At 36mm stack and 8mm heel to toe drop, the Scignal sits below the towering platforms of current max cushion trainers while still delivering serious protection. No carbon plate. A nylon shank handles torsional stability instead, which keeps the ride flexible and natural rather than rigid and prescriptive. 210 grams in a size 9 men's.
The upper is recycled polyester mesh with an open weave for ventilation and tighter, abrasion resistant fabric for structural support. Synthetic microfiber suede panels reinforce high wear areas and add a material quality that most performance running shoes don't bother with. The suede develops a patina over time like a classic sneaker. A honeycomb tongue, fully padded collar, flat laces with double perforations for lockdown fit, and 360 degree reflective highlights complete the build.
