1981 Jeep CJ-5 Restomod With Matching Utility Trailer
Restomods usually try to modernize everything and end up losing what made the original interesting. This 1981 Jeep CJ-5 takes a more balanced approach, keeping the raw character intact while upgrading the parts that actually matter.
Originally a New Mexico truck, it went through a full refresh around 2022. The body was stripped and repainted in a deep green, the frame cleaned up, and key components upgraded to make it more usable without overcomplicating things. It still looks like a CJ-5, just tighter and more intentional.
Underneath, a replacement 258ci inline six is paired with a four speed manual and dual range transfer case. That setup keeps it simple, durable, and exactly what you want for something built to be driven, not just shown. A 3 inch lift and BFGoodrich 33 inch mud terrain tires give it proper stance and capability without going overboard.
The details are where it starts to stand out. Smittybilt winch, tubular doors, canvas half top, and a rear cargo setup with tools mounted in place all point to a build that was meant to be used. Inside, it mixes utility with a few practical upgrades like navigation, CB radio, and improved seating without drifting into modern SUV territory.
The matching 1950s trailer completes the setup. Refinished to mirror the Jeep, lifted, and sitting on the same wheels and tires, it turns the whole package into something closer to a self contained overland rig than a weekend toy.
It is not trying to be perfect, and that is exactly why it works.
