Peson Namsen Lightweight Rowing Boat
There's something timeless about a traditional wooden rowing boat, but keeping one in good condition can require more attention than most owners would like. Norwegian boatbuilder Peson has developed an interesting alternative with the Namsen, a beautifully understated rowing boat that retains the familiar lines of a classic river craft while replacing timber with virtually maintenance-free solid HDPE. The result combines traditional Scandinavian design with a more practical approach to life on the water.
Developed in Norway's Namdalen region, where generations of anglers and guides have relied on traditional rowing boats, the Namsen uses a familiar construction of keel, ribs, and overlapping strakes. Rather than wood, these components are formed from solid high-density polyethylene and welded together to create a durable hull. The traditional shape is designed to track straight, glide efficiently between strokes, and remain stable in changing conditions, particularly when fishing or navigating rivers.
Measuring 4.7 meters long and 1.32 meters wide, the Namsen accommodates two people with a maximum combined load of 200kg. It weighs 105kg and can be equipped with an outboard motor of up to 4 horsepower, providing a useful alternative to rowing when covering longer distances. The standard Rowing Package includes two bench seats, oars, and a bailer, while the Fishing Package adds a dedicated fishing chair and multiple rod holders. These practical details make it particularly appealing for anglers who value simplicity over complicated equipment.
The real advantage, however, becomes apparent when the boat isn't being used. Unlike traditional wooden boats, the HDPE hull doesn't absorb water and requires no seasonal painting, sanding, or caulking. It can remain outdoors throughout the season, making it especially useful at remote cabins, fishing properties, and lakeside retreats. HDPE also provides excellent resistance to everyday knocks and abrasion, although the material's weight means this is a boat intended for permanent or semi-permanent waterside use rather than frequent transportation.
Where the Abstract Watercraft Model 1 takes a modern approach to fishing with a compact hybrid raft design, the Peson Namsen focuses on preserving the familiar experience of rowing a traditional boat. Starting at NOK 54,500 before VAT and delivery, it represents a considered investment, but its appeal lies in offering classic rowing character without the demanding maintenance routine. For anyone who wants to spend more time fishing and less time looking after a boat, that's a compelling proposition.
