Ricoh GR IV Monochrome Camera
The Ricoh GR IV Monochrome is not a camera trying to please everyone, and that is exactly the point. This is a dedicated black and white tool built for photographers who care more about light, contrast, and timing than color profiles and presets.
At its core is a 26MP APS C BSI CMOS sensor with no color filter array. That single decision unlocks sharper detail, cleaner files, and better noise performance across the ISO range, which stretches all the way to 409600. Paired with the familiar 28mm equivalent F2.8 lens, the GR IV Monochrome delivers images that feel direct and honest, with no processing tricks hiding behind color data.
Ricoh adds a built in red filter that boosts contrast and deepens skies with a simple toggle. In real use, it is a smart and practical choice that saves you from carrying filters or adapters. The electronic shutter goes up to 1 16000 sec, letting you shoot wide open in bright conditions even without an ND filter. Autofocus remains fast and reliable thanks to on sensor phase detection, and in our experience it does not get in the way of image quality.
Physically, it feels like a GR should. Compact, solid, pocketable, and thoughtfully laid out. The subtle monochrome finish reinforces the intent without calling attention to itself.
This is a niche camera, no doubt. It costs more and does less by design. But for photographers who want to commit fully to black and white, the GR IV Monochrome offers a focused experience that few cameras can match.
