Satechi DotDisk 80Gbps SSD Enclosure

Fast external drives are easy to find. Fast external drives that stay fast during a sustained transfer are not. Most portable SSD enclosures hit their advertised speed for the first few gigabytes and then thermal throttle, slowing to a crawl exactly when you need them most. The Satechi DotDisk is built specifically around that problem.

The enclosure runs at up to 80Gbps through USB4 V2 and full Thunderbolt 5 support. That is twice the bandwidth of 40Gbps Thunderbolt 4 enclosures and eight times faster than standard 10Gbps USB solutions. Internal testing showed read speeds up to 5,937 MB/s and write speeds up to 6,415 MB/s paired with a Samsung SSD 9100 Pro on a MacBook Pro M4 Pro. Those numbers put it in desktop class territory from something you can slip into a jacket pocket.

The active cooling is what separates the DotDisk from the competition. A built in microfan and thermal pad inside the precision milled aluminum housing keep drive temperatures stable during extended transfers, backups, and data intensive workflows. This is not a passive enclosure with ventilation holes hoping airflow does the work. The fan actively prevents throttling so the speed you start a transfer at is the speed you finish at. For video editors moving large ProRes or RAW files, that consistency changes the workflow entirely.

The enclosure accepts M.2 2280 NVMe SSDs up to 8TB. Install whatever drive fits your current needs and upgrade later without replacing the enclosure. Compatible with Thunderbolt 5, Thunderbolt 4, and USB4 across Mac and Windows, so it works wherever you work. For speeds over 3,000 MB/s, you need a PCIe 4.0 x4 and NVMe 1.4 or newer drive. The enclosure requires a Thunderbolt 4, Thunderbolt 5, or USB4 40Gbps port minimum. It will not function with standard USB C or USB 3.x connections.

The box includes a 30cm Thunderbolt 5 cable, screwdriver, mounting screws, and thermal pad. SSD not included. Available in Silver or Space Black. A subtle LED confirms connection without being distracting. $199.99 with a 2 year limited warranty.
