Gerstner 41D Founders Edition
H. Gerstner & Sons has been making tool chests in Dayton, Ohio since 1906. They started as one of several American companies producing wooden chests. By the mid 1960s they were the last one standing. They never pivoted, never cut corners, and they're still working from the same location they moved into in 1913. Chests from the 1920s are still in daily use. That's not marketing, that's documented in the company archives.
The 41D Founders Edition is a reissue of the chest Best Made first introduced in 2014. Kiln dried American cherry drawer fronts, cherry hardwood construction with cherry veneered birch plywood on the top and back, and handpicked poplar on the interior drawer construction for stability over time. Tongue and groove joinery throughout, hand fitted drawers and panels, and a locking front panel that closes with the kind of precision that makes you want to open and shut it again. The finish is hand applied stain and lacquer that gives the cherry its depth now and will only get richer with age. Every compartment is lined in off white felt for moisture and abrasion protection. Polished brass plated hardware throughout.
What's new for this run is a numbered Best Made brass dataplate. One hundred chests, each one accounted for. An engraved "Measure Twice / Cut Once" ruler on the lid, a hand painted sash on the center drawer, and the Best Made red X embroidered on the lid carry over from the original edition.
For knives, watches, pens, or anything small that deserves better than a junk drawer, the 41D is the most dignified home you'll find. In stock and ships before Father's Day 2026.
