Benrus Sky Chief Watch
Some watches prove that certain eras simply got it right the first time. The Benrus Sky Chief is one of them. Originally introduced around 1940 as a dedicated pilot’s chronograph, it was built for cockpit precision during a time when navigation relied as much on wristwatches as on onboard instruments. Now, more than eighty years later, the Sky Chief returns as a faithful reissue that respects its proportions while embracing modern Swiss craftsmanship.
The new model stays remarkably true to the original. While many heritage reissues quietly scale up, the Sky Chief comes in at just 36mm in diameter, only slightly larger than the original 35mm reference. At 11.9mm thick with a 42.5mm lug to lug measurement, it preserves the compact, mid century wrist presence that defined the era. A double domed box sapphire crystal recreates the distinctive porthole effect of the vintage acrylic, while the 316L stainless steel case now delivers a thoroughly modern 100 meters of water resistance. Square pushers, downturned lugs, and a signed oversized crown maintain the period correct aesthetic.
The dial retains its classic tri compax layout and aviation inspired minute graduations. Available in Stratus Grey, a glossy lacquered black tone, and Cirrus White, a silvery sunburst finish, both versions feature azuré finished subdials and BG W9 Super LumiNova on Arabic numerals and syringe hands. Subtle lume tone variations echo the uneven aging seen in original examples. Elongated hash marks on the chronograph minute register remain, a historical detail tied to early dead reckoning navigation calculations.
Powering the watch is the Swiss ETA 2894 automatic chronograph movement, visible through a sapphire exhibition caseback. COSC certified, it runs at 4Hz with a 42 hour power reserve, offering modern accuracy beneath vintage styling. Each piece comes on a grey leather strap, with an additional black strap included.
At $3,950, the Benrus Sky Chief succeeds where many heritage revivals fall short. It captures the spirit of a golden age pilot’s chronograph while delivering contemporary reliability, proving that sometimes the best design move is simply respecting the past.
