Back Country House

Designed by David Maurice of LTD Architectural, the award-winning "Back Country House” is a stunning retreat located in the settlement of Puhoi, just north of Auckland, New Zealand. The two-storey residence plays on the uniquely New Zealand typology of the back-country hut, with a simple structure that comprises a timber frame, shed roof, terrace, and a metal-sided annex. The house comprises a single volume for living, cooking and eating, with shared open spaces, enhancing connection with each other, and to the surrounding environment. The highlight of the house however is outside on the deck, where an outdoor table peels away to reveal two parallel bathtubs fixed into the deck in front of the outdoor fireplace. Perfect.
